Rapid inactivation by phenylglyoxal of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (ribulose-P2 carboxylase) from the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans suggests the presence of an essential arginine, the modification of which is reduced in the presence of the substrate ribulose bisphosphate.
