Endothelial dysfunction and impaired nitric oxide bioavailability have been implicated in the pathogenesis of sickle cell anemia. Nitric oxide is a diatomic gas with a role in vascular homeostasis. Hemoglobin polymerization resulting from the HbS mutation produces erythrocyte deformation and hemolysis.
