BACKGROUND: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare hereditary disorder predominantly affecting the skin, the eyes and the cardiovascular system. The disease is caused by mutations in the ABCC6 gene and characterized by ectopic calcification and extracellular matrix (ECM) alterations.
