Ethylmethane sulfonate-induced mutants of several Escherichia coli strains that required delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) for growth were isolated by penicillin enrichment or by selection for respiratory-defective strains resistant to the aminoglycoside antibiotic kanamycin.
