Growth inhibition of the DNA virus vaccinia (VACV) by NO is known to occur at the level of DNA synthesis. This inhibition is partially reversed by addition of deoxyribonucleosides, suggesting that NO or NO-related species inhibit viral ribonucleotide reductase (RR).
