BACKGROUND: The yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous synthesizes astaxanthin, a carotenoid with high commercial interest. The proposed biosynthetic route in this organism is isopentenyl-pyrophosphate (IPP) --> geranyleranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) --> phytoene --> lycopene --> beta-carotene --> astaxanthin.
