Gain-of-function mutations within proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) are linked to familial autosomal dominant hypercholesterolaemia, a disease characterized by elevated plasma concentrations of cholesterol associated with low-density lipoproteins (LDLs).
