BACKGROUND: Single nucleotide mutations in alpha1 or alpha2 genes produce abnormal alpha-chain hemoglobins. Hemoglobin Q disorders including hemoglobin Q-Iran, hemoglobin Q-Thailand, and hemoglobin Q-India are important hemoglobin variants.
