Apicomplexan parasites infectious to humans include Plasmodium spp., Babesia spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp., Isospora belli and Cyclospora cayetanensis. With exception of Cryptosporidium spp., these parasites possess a non-photosynthetic plastid-like organelle called apicoplast.
