BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin (Hb) Groene Hart [alpha119 (H2)Pro-->Ser (alpha1)], also known as Hb Bernalda, is a nondeletional alpha-thalassemic Hb variant that is frequent in southern Italy and North Africa.
