Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is a toxic organophosphorous compound widely used in nuclear fuel processing and chemical industries. Rhodopseudomonas palustris, one of the most metabolically versatile photosynthetic bacteria, is shown here to degrade TBP efficiently under photosynthetic conditions.
