Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) may be caused by germline mutations of the KIT and platelet-derived growth factor receptor-alpha (PDGFRA) genes and treated by Imatinib mesylate (STI571) or other protein tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
