Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) uses hyaluronidase 2 (Hyal2) as a cell entry receptor. By making inactivating mutations to the catalytic residues of human Hyal2, we found that hyaluronidase activity was dispensable for its receptor function.
