The conditional lethal mutations ts8 and h8 are located in fda, the gene encoding aldolase, and they inhibit RNA synthesis upon shift to the nonpermissive temperature. We demonstrate that both mutations preferentially inhibit stable RNA synthesis and that this inhibition occurs at the level of transcription initiation.
