The ViaB region required for Vi antigen production in Salmonella typhi was cloned. The plasmid pGBM124 containing a 14-kb S. typhi chromosomal DNA fragment conferred the ability to produce Vi antigen on Escherichia coli HB101 and ViaB-deleted S. typhi GIFU10007-3.
