Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are characterized by a strong KIT receptor activation most often resulting from KIT mutations. In a smaller subgroup of tumors without KIT mutations, analogous activating mutations are found in the platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRalpha) gene.
