The prevention of cardiovascular disease is critically dependent on lipid-lowering therapy, including 3-hydroxymethyl-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins), cholesterol absorption inhibitors, bile acid resins, fibrates, and nicotinic acid.
