Monascus purpureus IB1 produces about 50-fold higher levels of azaphilone pigments than M. purpureus NRRL1596. Differently pigmented mutants were obtained from M. purpureus IB1 by nitrosoguanidine treatment. A highly pigmented strain, M. purpureus HP14, was found to lack the formation of the classical yellow and orange azaphilones and was found to produce only about 10% of the red azaphilone pigments.
