Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases interact with their cognate tRNAs in a highly specific fashion. We have examined the phenomenon that upon complex formation E. coli glutaminyl-tRNA synthetase destabilizes tRNA(Gln) causing chain scissions in the presence of Mg2+ ions.
