Flow cytometric methods commonly used to identify reticulocytes are of limited usefulness in malarious areas, since RNA staining also detects plasmodia. An important antigen expressed on reticulocytes is Duffy antigen receptor for chemokines (DARC, also known as Fy), the receptor for Plasmodium vivax.
