The pattern and extent of DNA sequence variability at the rplX locus (encoding ribosomal protein L24) has been investigated in nine strains of Bacillus subtilis. Overall, there is a very low level of nucleotide diversity, even at silent sites, which is probably due to selection among synonymous codons.
