BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by the absence of the muscle cytoskeletal protein dystrophin. Utrophin is an autosomal homologue of dystrophin, and overexpression of the protein is expected to compensate for the defect of dystrophin.
