Primary carnitine deficiency is a disorder of fatty acid oxidation caused by mutations in the Na+-dependent carnitine/organic cation transporter OCTN2. Studies with tyrosyl group-modifying reagents support the involvement of tyrosine residues in Na+ binding by sodium-coupled transporters.
