Among Escherichia coli strains isolated from stool specimens from patients with acute diarrhea, 1.4% were found to harbor cdtB by use of enrichment cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) PCR. These isolates were identified as being enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC).
