The etiology of autoimmune diseases is multifactorial with genetic factors being an important prerequisite. There are two clinical manifestations of autoimmune thyroiditis: the goitrous form (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) and the atrophic variant, which is characterized by hypothyroidism (primary myxoedema).
