Escherichia coli elaborates a flexible respiratory metabolism, involving differential synthesis of isoenzymes for many oxidation and reduction reactions. Periplasmic nitrate reductase, encoded by the napFDAGHBC operon, functions with concentrations of nitrate that are too low to support respiration by membrane-bound nitrate reductase.
