Decrease of fibrinolytic potential is considered to be a risk factor for arterial thrombosis. The recently described thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) attenuates fibrinolysis by cleaving of the C-terminal lysine residues from fibrin, thereby inhibiting tPA mediated plasminogen activation.
