Telomere shortening and lack of telomerase activity have been implicated in cellular senescence in human fibroblasts. Expression of the human telomerase catalytic reverse transcriptase subunit (hTERT) in these cells reconstitutes telomerase activity and immortalizes the cells without tumor transformation.
