Hyperhomocysteinemia, a possible risk factor for vascular disease can result from folate deficiency due to anticonvulsant therapy. A reaction catalyzed by 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) supplies 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, needed to remethylate homocysteine to methionine.
