Human SCO2 is a nuclear-encoded Cu-binding protein, presumed to be responsible for the insertion of Cu into the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (COX) holoenzyme. Mutations in SCO2 are associated with cardioencephalomyopathy and COX deficiency.
