Rare HIV-1 strains are becoming more prevalent in the United States. Eight patients from the Bronx were identified as having HIV-1 genotypes not previously seen in the U.S. The patients lived in a community with one of the highest prevalence rates in the country, and where injection drug use and high-risk heterosexual behavior is rampant.
