CADASIL, an autosomal dominant adult onset arteriopathy causing stroke and dementia in humans, is underlaid by a non atherosclerotic non amyloid angiopathy involving mainly the media of small cerebral arteries; it is characterized by major lesions of vascular smooth muscle cells.
