Previous work has demonstrated that circulating neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leukocytes [PMNs]) adhere to cardiac myocytes via beta(2)-integrins and cause cellular injury via the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase enzyme system.
