The ResD-ResE signal transduction system is required for aerobic and anaerobic respiration in Bacillus subtilis. The histidine sensor kinase ResE, by functioning as a kinase and a phosphatase for the cognate response regulator ResD, controls the level of phosphorylated ResD.
