We have demonstrated that acylphosphatase possesses ATP-diphosphohydrolase (apyrase-like) activity. In fact, acylphosphatase first catalyses the hydrolysis of the gamma-phosphate group of nucleoside triphosphates, and then attacks the beta-phosphate group of the initially produced nucleoside diphosphates, generating nucleoside monophosphates.
