The identification and molecular characterization of a previously unidentified lipase, gehD, from the human cutaneous commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis is reported. A lipase-GehC-deficient but otherwise isogenic mutant of S. epidermidis 9 was constructed by allele replacement.
