[Ultrastructure of adherence of Streptococcus mutans MT8148 and its glucosyltransferase deficient mutants].

The ultrastructure of adherence of Streptococcus mutans MT8148 and its glucosyltransferase deficient mutants were compared by Scanning Electronic Microscope. Four patterns of adherence of tested strains in the presence of sucrose were observed. These results suggest that the cell-associated GTase is responsible for firm aggregation of cells. However, cell free GTase is also important in aggregation between cells.
