The mtr (multiple transferable resistance) gene complex in Neisseria gonorrhoeae encodes an energy-dependent efflux pump composed of the MtrC-MtrD-MtrE cell envelope proteins that serves to export structurally diverse antimicrobial, hydrophobic agents (HAs).
