Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease in which spinal cord motor neurons degenerate resulting in progressive paralysis. Some cases of ALS are caused by mutations in the antioxidant enzyme Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD).
