Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) are plant proteins believed to play a role in the defence against pathogenic fungi. Purified apple PGIP1 inhibited polygalacturonases (PGs) secreted by Verticillium dahliae grown on potato root cell walls and pectin.
