Polygalacturonase inhibitor proteins (PGIPs) act to thwart fungal penetration of the plant cell wall as an induced plant defense to early fungal attack. PGIPs are ubiquitous cell wall localized proteins that specifically inhibit the activity of fungal polygalacturonases (PGs), some of which are important fungal pathogenicity factors.
