Background: The combination of pamapimod, a p38 Mitogen activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) inhibitor, with pioglitazone, a Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma agonist is designated KIN001. It has potent in vitro antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, and as p38 MAPK and PPAR-gamma are involved in inflammation and fibrosis, KIN001 may reduce the risk of development of severe COVID-19.
