Streptococcus suis is part of the pig commensal microbiome and a major pathogen causing pneumonia and meningitis in pigs and occasionally also zoonotic meningitis. According to genomic analysis, S. suis is divided into asymptomatic carriage, respiratory and systemic strains with distinct genomic signatures.
