Plant pathogenic oomycetes, including biotrophic downy mildews and hemibiotrophs/necrotrophs such as Phytophthora and Pythium, cause enormous economic losses on cultivated crops. Lettuce breeders and growers face the threat of Bremia lactucae, the causal agent of lettuce downy mildew.
