Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare, autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder caused primarily by homozygous deletions or mutations in the SMN1 gene, leading to survival motor neuron protein deficiency and progressive degeneration of anterior horn alpha motor neurons.
