Water yam (Dioscorea alata [Dioscoreaceae]) is a vegetatively propagated tuberous food crop cultivated widely in the tropics and subtropics (Mignouna et al. 2003). It is the most widely distributed species of yam in China and eaten mainly as a vegetable.
