Many human anaemias are caused by defects in haemoglobin synthesis. The zebrafish mutant sauternes (sau) has a microcytic, hypochromic anaemia, suggesting that haemoglobin production is perturbed. During embryogenesis, sau mutants have delayed erythroid maturation and abnormal globin gene expression.
