To evaluate the frequency and significance of alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency in type 1 autoimmune hepatitis, 181 Caucasian patients were assessed for variant phenotypes. Three hundred three Caucasian patients with various other chronic liver diseases were similarly evaluated.
