Purple gene encodes 6-pyruvoyl tetrahydropterin synthase (PTP synthase) in Drosophila. The enzyme PTP synthase catalyzes the conversion of dihydroneopterin triphosphate (H2-NTP) to 6-pyruvoyl tetrahydropterin (PTP), an important intermediate for pterin compounds.
