A mutant of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus ADP1 unable to grow on alkanes was complemented for growth on hexadecane with a DNA fragment encoding a protein with homology to XcpR, a subunit of the general secretion pathway for exoproteins in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
